Gas Coma

gas coma through different filters

Lori Feaga
Science Team Member

University of Maryland, Department of Astronomy
College Park, MD

Using the infrared spectrometer, Lori derived maps of the distribution of both water and carbon dioxide gases in the coma, with respect to the nucleus. These show more carbon dioxide released from the southern pole of the comet. While water is distributed everywhere, the maps reveal higher concentrations in the direction toward the sun.
