Impactor Mockup
Built for the same purpose as the Flyby mockup, the impactor model shows the Impactor Targeting Sensor (ITS), the tall black box which looks out the bottom of the spacecraft as seen here, surrounded by several electronics boxes in the center of the spacecraft. The yellow and green fixture in the center of the picture is a plastic model of the "star tracker" which will help the Impactor determine where it is in space during its free-flight beginning 24 hours before impact. Layers of honey-combed copper will be loaded on the bottom of the spacecraft to provide mass to excavate the biggest crater possible. A plexiglass cover shows where the upper part of the impactor housing will be.
