Lorna Hess-Frey
Flyby Structures & Mechanisms Lead, Deep Impact
What is the coolest thing about Deep Impact?
The coolest thing about Deep Impact is that it is a science project that everyone understands. Young kids can get really excited about it because they have at least a basic understanding of what we are trying to do.
Why do you like working at Ball Aerospace?
The people I work with and the variety of projects.
How did you end up in the aerospace industry?
Many long conversations with a friend (now retired from Ball Aerospace). He got me excited about and encouraged me to try for a position.
What do you do in your spare time?
Attend my children's activities and volunteer in the school. On the weekends we down-hill ski, snowshoe, backpack, hike - basically anything in the mountains.
What is one yet-to-be achieved life goal?
I want to attend the launch of one of the projects I helped design.
What do you hope to learn from the Deep Impact mission?
I have already learned more than I could have ever imagined! I want to learn as much about interplanetary missions as possible.
Who inspired you?
My fifth grade teacher.
Were you a science-oriented kid?
I have always loved math and science.
What was your favorite book as a kid?
Anything about horses.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I always wanted to be a large animal veterinarian.
